Create and Upload a File to your Folder
Create and Upload a File to your Folder
In this part of the Ice Breaker you create a document according to the specific requirements listed below. After creation you submit the document to your instructor by uploading it to your Student Folder.
Currently the three most prevalent word processing software programs are Word, WordPerfect, and Works. If you do not have a word processing program on your computer, you can use the Wordpad program (located on the Start Button, Programs, Accessories menu) to produce the file for this assignment.
There is no need to close this window or exit Educator to complete this assignment. The most effective way to complete the assignment is to use the multi-tasking ability of your Operating System. In other words, read the instructions in this window and complete the document in the word processing window. This inherent ability of all operating systems that work with the virtual campus allows you to switch between the open program windows to efficiently accomplish your work.
Create the Document
Open your word processing program and create the document described in the numbered items below.
1) Personal contact information:
- Your full name (first, middle initial, and last)
- Your address (include city, state, and zip code)
- Telephone number(s) and the best times to contact you
- Include any other pertinent contact information
2) Please write two paragraphs to tell your instructor about yourself. Include your educational background, goals and reason(s) for taking this course.
3) Write a third paragraph consisting of one-sentence to verify that you have read and understood the course syllabus. If you have questions about any part of the syllabus, please ask them via e-mail.
Save the document:
Once you have completed the document save it using the steps below.
Save the document with the filename "StudentInformation" (without the quotes).
Important Note: Filename rules for files uploaded in online classes are letters and numbers only, mixed case (upper and lower letters) permitted. This means filenames can contain no spaces and no special characters.

In the "Save in:" listbox, determine where to save the document. Pay attention to where you save it because you will need to find the file to upload it to your student folder in a moment.
Set the "Save as Type" listbox to "Text Only" for this file. This determines the file format as "text" and gives the file a .txt extension.
Important Note: This assignment requires a Text Only format file. Another format widely used for file transfer in online classes is Rich Text Format (.rtf file extension). RTF is a more robust format than the Text format and is another of the options in the "Save as Type" listbox shown. Your instructor may require use of the RTF format in future assignments.
Upload the file:
After the document is saved, upload the file to your student folder. Be sure to associate the file with the Icebreaker assignment, if available, as you upload.
Click the link below for Upload Instructions that open in a popup window.
Uploading the file completes the Icebreaker.
